The Beginning...


        Bobby and Sandra met while filming "Come September" in Rome. Their first meeting was not on great terms.



        When asked about her initial reaction to Bobby Darin, Sandra Dee later responded, "I hated him ! We spent four weeks in Portofino shooting and I never said anything. He proposed to me before we started the picture. He had just arrived in Portofino and was in a yellow canary suit. And now he'd be very much in style. He looked ridiculous. I looked up and said "Who the hell is that ?". He was waving, "Hi, I'm Bobby Darin. You're gonna be my wife."

        Soon after that, producer Robert Altman started to make a proper introduction between the two, but Bobby took over. "I've always enjoyed your pictures, Miss Weld," he told Sandra, his face straight, his voice earnest. Without blinking, Sandra answered, "And I always buy your records, Fabian." Sandra later said," He would do anything for a reaction. He wet me down in one scene and I had to be dried off. I thought the director was going to kill him...."Sandra thought Darin was "abrasive, cocky and insulting."

        Finally Sandra's mother asked Bobby "Why do you do this ?" to which Bobby replied," Any reaction from her is better than no reaction at all."

        But soon things began to change......
