Dr. Henry Armitage is a guest lecturer at Miskatonic University on subjects dealing with the occult, particularly the rituals described in an ancient book, The Necronomicon, which is kept in the Rare Book Room of the campus library.
Two coeds, Nancy Wagner and her friend Elizabeth Hamiliton are in the process of locking the book back in its case when they are interrupted by a young man , Wilbur Whateley. He talks the girls into letting him read the book at the library table, although use of the book by the public is forbidden.
