The Story
The men who wanted to marry Heather Halloran would have made a fair sized crowd on any street corner. Yet, on the night her baby was to be born, she had no wedding ring on her finger, no "Mrs." to her name, no husband.
Careening toward the hospital in the car, the police escort sirens wailing, she felt as helpless as she had when her mother had made her audition for talent scouts as a child.
Stage struck Louise Halloran, elevator operator, had been determined her daughter would become a singing star. So, all through Heather's girlhood, Louise's elevator has served as a capsule tryout stage.
"You're going to be somebody!" Louise had insisted fiercely. "A star!"
But Heather had other plans. Finishing High School had taken many a skirmish, four years of college had required major battles.
Louise figured her only child was wasting time out of the spotlight. But Heather knew all along what she wanted.
And now, they were rushing her past a hospital door and the pains were coming closer together. A nurse put her into a wheel chair and her small army of escorts --the policeman, a hovering Louise, Dick Bender, Pat Murad, Hank Judson and a rather bewildered stranger named Judge North--were hustling her down the corridor.
"Heather!" Hank was urging, beside her. "Marry me and give that Baby a name!"
Pat was attempting to shoulder Hank aside, "Hey! I got a name too!"
"I'm the logical father!" Dick was
bellowing." I live next door to her!"
Mortified, Heather buried her face in her
hands." How? Could I ever get into a mess like this? I'm a nice girl!"
At least Louise was realizing her dream. Her daughter was starring tonight!
"Star material!" Louise had always called her, to the booking agents.
