When Arnold arrives at Francesca's apartment, he finds her practicing her ballet. He presents her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The couple sit and talk and soon Arnold professes his love for Francesca, just as he did before.

Later, the couple are in the bedroom kissing, with the record of "Moonlight Serenade" playing in the background from the other room. Arnold again tells Francesca he loves her. She asks him to go into the other room and turn the record over.

When Arnold is in the other room he finds a picture of Francesca with another man. Outraged he confronts her with it. She tells Arnold she was lonely and was only wanting to spend a cozy evening with someone, since her husband was in the war. In a fit of rage, as the air raid sirens are blowing loudly, Arnold strangles his beloved Francesca.

Arnold realizes the terrible thing he has done just as the building is damaged from explosives. Just then, voices from outside the apartment ask if anyone is harmed, and Arnold, wanting to cover himself from the crime he has committed, takes a beam from the ceiling that has become loose and drops it on his precious Francesca.
