Gidget(1959)

Frances Lawrence is almost 17, petite, an A student, and an accomplished musician. She has studied about everything but sex. In fact she hates dates (she rejects her father's suggestion to meet a certain nice young man), and when her friends drag Frances to the beach to meet boys, she is happy when a clique of surfers is not interested in them. Her friends leave to try some other beach, but Frances stays to enjoy herself swimming.

When Frances almost drowns, surfer 'Moondoggie' rescues her. Frances is immediately fascinated by surfing and persuades her father to give her the money for a surfboard. Thanks to full time surf bum Kahoona, who lives in a hut on the beach, Frances is admitted to the clique of surfers as their little mascot called 'Gidget' (Girl+midget).

Moondoggie treats Gidget rather cool. She thinks that he is a grouch, but when he rescues her for a second time, she cannot help falling in love with him. However Moondoggie still does not pay her much attention. He dates with beautiful Joanne and ponders, whether he shall quit college and become a full time surf bum like Kahoona.

Gidget tries to impress Moondoggie by becoming a great surfer in no time, but when he would not stop treating her like an infant, Gidget invents a plan to make him jealous. She pays surfer Hot Shot twenty bucks to take her to the luau (big surfers party to celebrate the end of summer), where he is to pretend to be crazy about her.

To get to the luau Gidget leaves home without permission. She is to meet Hot Shot at a certain café, but there she unexpectedly finds Moondoggie, who took over the 'assignment' from Hot Shot. Of course Moondoggie has no idea who is to be made jealous. At the luau Gidget tells Moondoggie that she is after Kahoona. Moondoggie is shocked ("He's twice your age"), but he duly pretends to be mad for Gidget. However when he kisses her, he realizes that he is not acting at all. Yet their "act" seems to be successful: Gidget drives away from the luau together with Kahoona, heading for a certain 'beach shack'. When Moondoggie arrives up at the beach shack, she quickly leaves by the back door.

Kahoona and Moondoggie have a fight, which has to be settled by a police patrol. Afterwards the police pick up Gidget, who is stranded on the road with a flat but no drivers licence. At the police station she meets her parents, who desperately searched for her all night. Her father rampages and announces that from now on he will arrange Frances' social life.

The next day he arranges a date for Frances with Jeffrey Matthews, a well bred friend's son. Frances does not want to meet him, and is very surprised that Jeffrey is Moondoggie as well as he is surprised to see her. Moondoggie takes Gidget to the beach, where Kahoona pulls down his hut. Thanks to Gidget he discovered that "nothing but a free life" is not what he really wants and got a job. Kahoona kisses Gidget goodbye and then, finally, Moondoggie kisses Gidget and PINS her!
