Another sad surprise to Cabe and his "daughters" is the destruction of the Cabe homestead.
The "family" starts to rebuild Cabes cabin where he puts the spoiled city girls through many rigorous chores, which includes building a dam. (Ada has to milk a very energetic cow.)
After all the complaining the girls have done, Charity finds out that Cabe intends on leaving the girls his land.
Then, disaster strikes when Blue Wetherall, the son of Amos, who killed Cabe's wife unleashes a stampede through Cabe's land almost killing Cabe and his girls. Joshua then decides that the whole undertaking has become too dangerous and orders the girls back to St. Louis. Mae, Ava and Charity, who have grown close to Joshua Cabe, refuse, stating that the land is important to all of
them. But Cabe wins and they prepare to leave town.
Blue Wetherall steals a letter addressed to Cabe from St. Louis at the downtown post office and learns of the phony daughters of Joshua Cabe. He is intent on ruining Joshua Cabe. As the girls arrive in town, he finds Mae alone and seduces her as blackmail to a deserted
spot. His scheme backfires when Mae grabs his gun and shoots him. Amos Wetherall then challenges Cabe to a duel.
The girls stand up to the Wetheralls and defend their "father",
demanding at gunpoint that they keep their land. Mae, Charity and Ada win.
The story ends as Joshua Cabe and his daughters go home, with Ada, Mae and Charity arguing over who is the prettiest.
