Molly's mother Helen watches them from a window. She quarrels with her husband Ken, whether a decent girl lets a boy kiss her the very first night they meet. Helen rebukes Molly for her conduct. Molly promises to stop kissing Johnny if her mother stops fighting with her father. But Molly does not know that 20 years ago her father and Johnny's mother Sylvia had been lovers. At that time it was against the rules for the Pine Island girls to have dates with the lifeguard, so they both trapped themselves in loveless marriages: Ken stuck with overly virtous Helen because of Mollie, and Sylvia stuck with intelligent drunkard Bart because of Johnny. But now their reunion brings on old feelings which they cannot resist. For several nights Ken and Sylvia secretly meet in a boat house. They don't want to hurt anybody, but the night watchman sees them and tells Helen, who says nothing but considers how to get most out of a divorce.

While Ken Jorgenson goes to the main land for two days, Johnny and Molly go on a sailing trip. They capsize and make shore on some other island and spend the night there together. The Coast Guard picks them up the next day. Helen Jorgenson makes a doctor completely examine Molly, although Molly screams that she has been a good girl. The doctor finds nothing wrong, but Helen orders Molly never to see Johnny again and tells her, that Ken and Sylvia have an affair. Molly runs away in desperation and shock and tells Johnny. She flees when Helen comes searching for her, whereas Johnny threatens to kill Helen, if she hurts Molly.
