When Ken Jorgenson comes back that evening, Molly is still missing.
Upon hearing what happened, he exclaims in front of everybody, that
he wouldn't have blamed Johnny if he had actually killed Helen.
Helen retaliates that of course he wouldn't, as that would have made
it easier for him to sneak off and sleep with Sylvia.
Now they all know and have to face the truth.
While Ken and Johnny help to find Molly, Bart and Sylvia bury their
marriage. Bart had known about Ken and Sylvia ever since she screamed
for Ken when she gave birth to Johnny. They agree to have a divorce,
but Bart insists that Sylvia can't have Johnny.

Ken and Helen Jorgenson divorce, too. Helen enrolls Molly
to an exclusive finishing school in Boston, whereas Johnny is
sent to a college in Virginia. In spite of Helen's prohibition
Molly and Johnny exchange letters, and they meet when Johnny
is on his way home for Christmas. Helen finds out and slaps
Molly, who falls on their plastic Christmas tree.
"Merry Christmas, Mama..."
Molly and Johnny hate their parents, so they do not even come
to Ken's and Sylvia's wedding. However Ken and Sylvia manage to
persuade their children to stay with them for the spring vacation.
