Sandra Dee:
"Plans For A Life Without Bobby"
This article appeared in the 1963 issue of
Who's Who In Hollywood magazine.
Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin made a movie together recently called If a Man Answers. It was about a young married couple in the first throes of marital adjustment, and it was shot before the birth of the Darin heir, Dodd Mitchell, who's now a year old. Although Sandy and Bobby enjoyed doing the film, they turned thumbs down on plans for a future professional life together.
Neither Sandy nor Bobby approve of husbands and wives working together ("There's no news to tell each other when you get home"). Sandra thinks careers are better kept separate ("I don't like to see a married couple in a film; I think some of the excitement is lost," she says) and wants a life away from Bobby--when it comes to work.
But she'd rather keep her plans to herself. The reason is simple: if you say you aren't interested in working with your mate, the columnists hop on this information and build it up to read RIFT, and Sandy and Bobby have already suffered from such treatment.
Recently, Sheilah Graham was kind enough to report, "While it's true Sandra and Darin wish to keep their working lives separate, the rumors of trouble in their marriage are exaggerated," but other writers, less reasonable than Sheilah, persist in seeing black signs in the Darins' intenetion to split. Professionally, that is.
Which is why Sandra Darin doesn't broadcast this intention anymore.
